TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to reduce the volume of AI-made media appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the platform disclosed that it now features over 1 thousand million AI videos.
Trial and Implementation
The update is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement coincides with a rise in content created by AI, spurred by recent AI video creators.
AI Content on Other Platforms
It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the quickest rising channels on another major platform primarily display content made by AI. A large amount of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently nonsensical or surreal.
“We know from our community that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, ranging from digital art to educational videos, and we intend to provide users the power to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own preferences,” commented a platform representative.
AI on the Platform
TikTok announced that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network labeled as made with AI. Collectively, more than 100 million media items are added to the platform each day, making clips made by AI a minor portion of its complete catalog.
Customizing Your Feed
Users will be able to decrease or raise the amount of AI content they watch by opening the “manage topic” feature in the platform and picking AI-made media. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the tool cover politics, clothing, aesthetics, and dance.
AI Disclosure Rules
TikTok’s rules require creators to label convincing AI-made content, and it forbids malicious AI impersonations of public figures or critical incidents. Any believable AI video that is unmarked can be removed under its user guidelines.
Furthermore, the platform will now add an artificially created tag to content made using its own AI tools, or detected by an collaborative effort for spotting content made by AI. This action is intended to help prevent users from attempting to circumvent the tagging system.
Responsible AI Funding
TikTok is also introducing a $2m educational fund for specialists and institutions to create educational content about ethical AI use. This program will support charitable organizations specializing in teaching coding and technology.
Platform Protection
The platform has justified its moderation strategy, during controversy over plans to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in Britain. It is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its content moderation team in London, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.
A senior executive stated that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content before it has to be seen by staff. TikTok announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the past year due to the use of its AI tools.
“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
