The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team might be building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
