Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
