EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal news:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
